This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are curious, engaged, and eager learners with a drive to experience and explore. They come to me with deep abiding passions that pursue in myriad ways, whether it is Science Olympiad or Speech and Debate.
They are excited about learning and growing.
My Project
Last spring, several of my students joined a group called Diversify Our Narratives. They reached out to teachers asking them to increase the representation and diversity in what is taught. They asked us to pledge to include 50% of texts from BIPOC writers.
It's an excellent goal, but with British Lit it is also very challenging.
Often, what gets taught are the books we already have. With British Lit, that means that most of the books are canonical stalwarts by mostly dead white men.
Klara and the Sun is an excellent example of how I can diversify what we read. Kazuo Ishiguro is a Japanese British Nobel Prize winning author. This book is especially exciting to share because it brings up questions around what makes us human. I cannot wait to share this with students.
