My students need fresh new books for shared reading to supplement our district curriculum. We need real books that are engaging, entertaining, and inspiring to foster a love of books and reading!
Our school is an Artful Learning school with a focus on the performing arts. Our students access the curriculum and state standards through arts based strategies and projects. This year we have partnered with our local university to provide additional experiences in the arts which include dance, yoga, drums, pottery, tumbling, keyboarding, and violin, among others. Our students are excited about having the opportunity to participate in learning experiences they may not have otherwise.
Our students come from low socioeconomic households with a variety of challenges that often impede their ability to succeed in the classroom.
The basic needs of our student often go unmet outside of the school doors. Many students deal with behavioral issues as a result of trauma, stress, or other emotional disabilities. Our students deserve to feel the sense of pride that comes with overcoming obstacles and achieving goals.
My Project
Our current reading curriculum is less than exciting, and the weekly books leave a lot to be desired. My own personal collection is also lacking. My students love our shared reading time, but we need more interesting books. I have researched recommended titles for first grade shared reading and selected four books per month that I know will make our shared reading time more engaging. The books I have selected also have resources that go along with them which I intend to purchase from Teacher's Pay Teachers. These books are fantastic not only for modeling fluent reading and teaching comprehension strategies, they are full of great words for vocabulary, and most of them have an important lesson embedded in the story. I know these books will bring a love of reading to our classroom! Please consider helping to build our classroom book collection with REAL books!
