My Students
My students are diverse and highly motivated to be involved in extracurricular activities. I serve students throughout the Chicago area, primarily from low income, single-parent households. The majority of my students are at-risk students and are looking for positive activities to get involved in so that they can avoid being out on the dangerous Chicago streets after school.
It takes a village to raise a child and in my school, we believe that each one can teach one.
We are in the process of starting a football team in which we need new uniforms and cleats for our players so that they can compete next school year. Our male enrollment has started to decrease due to football not being an option. In addition to our enrollment decreasing, we also have a difficult time keeping our young men interested in school and having something to be a part of at the school. Starting the football team will give our young men an opportunity to be in a safe, productive environment, gaining lifelong skills that will follow them once they graduate and venture off to college and/or the workplace.
My Project
Football will help make a difference in our students' lives because they will have an opportunity to better their character, learn how to be team players, learn discipline, and be involved in extra curriculum activities for a change. It will reduce the time they have to be out on the streets with nothing to do after school. It will potentially present options for some of them to go off to college and play football. It will also potentially be an opportunity for students to earn scholarships to assist with them paying for college. Lastly, it will motivate them to maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher, which is a requirement in order to be eligible to play football.
