My Students
I'm an educator in a Title I school in the Bronx. Our school is comprised of many students that are first and second generation immigrants as well as students with disabilities. While we have students that come from very hard-working and decent families, we also educate a population of students that come from homes stricken by poverty and dysfunction. I educate students with disabilities whose disabilities are often compounded by their living situation. My students' disabilities vary from Autism to Emotionally Disturbed, but these are just labels. I want my students to defy every label that has been assigned and/or implied because of their circumstances.
My students inspire me to be better every day because they are amazing and are deserving of my absolute best!
They are curious, motivated to learn, and hard workers despite the hardships that they face. They educate me as much I do them! My goal is to have my students recognize that they should never limit their potential and their future does not need to be determined by their circumstances.
My Project
As I was watching Mrs. Livingston's webinar about her project "Bringing Families Together with Books and More", I began to think of how I could truly engage families in their children's learning. As a teacher of a more restrictive special education class it has been incredibly difficult to get my student's parents to become active participants in their child's learning. While I was listening to Mrs. Livingston suddenly inspiration struck, GAMES!
Games have a way of bringing families together and creating that bonding time that is essential as children are developing.
My project would engage families in their children's learning through Family Game Night! Students would be able to check out games to take home and play with their parents. Many of my students come into my classroom lacking the essential foundational skills needed to access a good book or solve a "simple" math problem. For my students doing homework is a struggle and a time rife with conflict at home, but what if their assignment was just to spend time together playing a game with their parents and siblings? The fact that the game would hone on skills they need to work on while still being fun, well that's just a bonus!
I chose academic games that look very much like games you would normally play at home. Students could work on their money skills and understanding of earning and spending money with the game "Allowance"; they can also further develop math skills like multiplication and division with "Mastering Math Skills Games". Students struggling with sight word recognition can play, "Sight Word Bingo" and those struggling with comprehension can use the "Reading Comprehension Games Library" to develop essential reading skills. The best part is that my students will spend time with their families while progressing in their learning!
