I teach in a Title I elementary school where 75% of our students receive free and reduced-price meals. It is a small town with a low socio-economic standing. Many of the students are part of a backpack program sponsored by the local churches, to have food over the weekends. These students are faced with challenges both in school and outside the classroom.
Despite the hardships they may face, my students come to school every day ready to learn and excited for their academic day.
They are great with technology and are eager to learn. From the time they walk in my classroom, I make sure the students know that I believe in them and that they have choices to make in life that will lead them to be productive members of our community.
My Project
Today, nearly 1 out of 4 children and teens in developed countries are overweight or obese. Those extra pounds put kids at risk for developing serious health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and asthma. Childhood obesity also takes an emotional toll. The most common causes are genetic factors, lack of physical activity, unhealthy eating patterns, or a combination of these factors.
Lack of physical education in adolescents is one of the most common factors for childhood obesity.
Knowing that social media, technology and television gain most of their attention at home in the evenings, it is my goal to get students active and engaged on the playground while at school.
It is my goal to provide these students with equipment such as basketballs, soccer balls, footballs, jump ropes, and kickballs so that recess will be engaging for all students. In addition, it is my hope to be able to purchase items such as replacement basketball nets, bases, and mesh shirts so that the students are able to cooperate and play team activities.
