"Every child deserves a champion: an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best they can possibly be." -Rita Pierson. I live by this quote in my classroom.
My students are a diverse group, with some students speaking English as a second language, some with learning disabilities, and others who are achieving beyond grade level expectations.
More than 75% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and do not have access to technology at home. Even with the obstacles they face, they are a motivated group of kids with hearts of gold.
My Project
Scholastic magazines are a great supplement to any reading program. The magazines provide current events in subject areas such as Social Studies and Science.
The stories and articles enhance reading comprehension and writing.
It also allows the students to engage in conversation and share their thoughts and opinions on the world outside the classroom walls. This engagement allows them to become critical thinkers.
Students will work on literacy skills such as main idea, key ideas, text structures, text features, etc.
The students will also take home the magazines to read with their parents which will provoke additional discussion and thought.
My students will look forward to reading these papers.
