My Students
My students come from all over Philadelphia to attend classes at our high school. I work with students in grades 11-12 through my 12th grade English classes and AP English Literature & Composition class. The majority of our students come from poverty-stricken neighborhoods. Our school district and school have minimal funding resources and we barely have enough money in our budget to pay for necessities like books and paper.
My students are dedicated and hard-working young scholars intent on high achievement.
As a history-themed school in Pennsylvania, our core tenets are knowledge of history, democratic deliberation, and active citizenship. We work to achieve these tenets in our classroom through active engagement with texts and a focus on critical analysis of the world around us. We are working to become better writers and readers in order to become lifelong learners and active citizens in our world.
My Project
My AP Literature course strives to help students analyze complex literature from a diverse set of perspectives. This requires us to read a variety of novels and plays with complex themes and characters. Traditionally, this course has been focused on "the canon" which has led to a culmination of less diverse authors and texts populating our book room. I am looking for opportunities to bring more culturally diverse and complex perspectives into our curriculum.
These books would provide both a window and a mirror into a more diverse literary perspective.
The perspectives in these texts are both reflective of my students' cultures and racial identity and different in terms of their experiences. Your donation would allow my students to both see themselves more clearly in literature while also providing opportunities to expand their literary analysis skills.
