I teach 6th grade special education students Reading and Math. The demographics for the school are unique in that 94% of the students are provided with free and reduced lunch. Furthermore, it is a Title 1 school that serves students who reside in the area with the highest crime rate in my city's metro area. The current population percentages are as follows: American Indian 4.7%, Asian 1.2%, African American 54.5%, Hispanic 20.1%, Caucasian 19.6%, Students on IEP 20.5%. These students have limited background knowledge. Their universe is small. However, this year we have been privileged to have a guest teacher from China. This teacher is a highly respected teacher in China. My student's world has been opened since they have been introduced to the new instructor from China. Now they want to learn the language.
The acquisition of the language of Chinese is a daunting task for most English Speaking Americans. Yet, children acquire knowledge about language in general much more quickly than adults. My students struggle with acquisition of words in the English language. It is important to create references for them that are based in the real world. Teaching students English words using a digital camera, helps them place pictures with words. They are in control of the pictures they are taking, so the vocabulary development is based on high interest. If these students can add in the Chinese words with the English words next to the picture, they can begin to integrate Chinese into what they are learning. The digital camera is their window to that world.
I would like to receive a camera because it will allow me to have the students take the pictures and record what they want to know in a powerful way. After they create the images, we are going to compile the images into books. We will search for additional grants to fund the printing of those books, so that each student can have a copy of their book that is bound.
Your help will make my students better readers with broader skills in the acquisition of English as well as Chinese. Thomas Friedman says in his book, THE WORLD IS FLAT, that every individual is going to have to run a little faster if he or she wants to advance his or her standard of living, in order to stay in touch with what is happening to our economy globally. Students who are empowered with the language of Chinese will be more skilled and marketable as adults. Please help us achieve our dream.
