Help me give my students feeders, houses, waterers, a water feature, and seed to attract wildlife to our outdoor classroom, and provide trail cameras so they can see the visitors that come when we are not there.
My school is a rural elementary school in Southern Oregon, where many children come from low-income families, and all students receive free breakfast and lunch. Each year our students' academic abilities range from talented and gifted to struggling with basic skills in the areas of Math and/or Language Arts. Like all children, these students share a curiosity and enjoyment of the natural world. However, their contact with nature is often limited by busy schedules and a media-saturated culture.
My desire is to bring to life a nature trail and forested outdoor classroom area that was once a part of our school's campus.
My Project
Our school is nestled in the hills of rural Southern Oregon, and our campus includes an area of forested land with a nature trail and outdoor classroom that has not been used for years. I want to help restore, refurbish, and furnish this outdoor learning area for the students at my school, so that they can enjoy the benefits of a forest classroom.
Furnishing this learning area with bird feeders and seed, bird waterers, milkweed plants, a water feature, and a Mason bee house, will attract wildlife for student observation and learning; and installing night game cameras will expand observation and learning opportunities beyond the times when children are physically present.
Restoration of this resource is very timely at this point, as our district recently adopted the StemScopes science curriculum, and access to nature will enhance and enrich our students' science learning. Although I teach second grade, and have listed this project as focusing on PreK-2, these resources will also be available for grades 3-5 and the Life Skills class at our school.
Outdoor learning has been shown to contribute to the academic, emotional, and physical wellbeing of children. Many studies have indicated the value of outdoor education for our children.
