My students need books with strong, interesting characters to get them hooked on reading! Characters include Elephant and Piggie; Biscuit; Fly Guy; and Splat the Cat.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"A book is a device to ignite the imagination"- Alan Bennett
I start every day with this quote in mind. Students need books which inspire them; stir their emotions; and lead them to connect with characters beyond the pages. My students need strong characters in their lives!
My class consists of 20 curious and voracious first grade readers in a high needs school.
Of the 20 students in my class, more than half are English Language Learners. They speak many different languages including Spanish, Bosnian, Russian and Vietnamese. Many did not know how to speak english until they began school. They amaze me at every turn. They love learning and are always excited to read new books. A large portion of my students come from areas of high poverty where a book is a luxury and not a staple in the home. Often, the only books they read are the ones I am able to provide in my classroom. They ask every day to take my books home to read and share with their families.
My Project
My students love to read and have read their way through the majority of my classroom library. One of the most important parts of our day is reader's workshop. Choice is a key motivator in spurring students to read. Every week, my students choose new books for reader's workshop. These books are at their independent reading level which allows them to practice reading as well as, supports them in establishing the foundation for life long reading habits. High interest books that are engaging and interesting are essential to reading. I have asked for books from popular first grade series. They have strong and interesting characters with whom my students will fall in love. These books will provide an opportunity to engage in character studies and develop relationships with favorite characters.
Through character studies, my students will learn how to connect with characters.
They will develop an awareness of a character as a living, breathing person. Most importantly, these books will provide my students with the opportunity to engage with exciting and interesting books. Many of us developed a love of reading through finding and falling in love with a character or book series. These characters will help bring books to life for my students.
