This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My kindergarten students love to come to school and learn. Coming from all over the world, they speak many different language and come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. They are filled with curiosity and joy for the books that we read in class.

My students come from all over the world, including Somalia, Haiti, Ethiopia, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia.

Many come from families that fled war-torn countries in order to find a better life for their children. They come from a multiplicity of cultures and religions, but are also similar in many ways. They all have a thirst and excitement for learning more about the world, and deeply enjoy hands-on learning opportunities. They love to read all kinds of books, play with different materials, construct with sand, clay, Lego's and blocks, and paint with gusto. While they are all English Language Learners, this only serves to further encourage them to do their best and seek out other learning opportunities.

My Project

The three main materials we are asking for are plush literary toys, Kinetic Sand materials and additional Lego materials. The literary toys will help to make a more inviting space in our classroom library. Students can read their favorite books while holding on to their character and further increase a love for learning. The Kinetic Sand and Lego materials will help my students as they continue to experiment with ways to construct sturdy and unique structures, building the skills they need to become future constructors and engineers. All of these "play" materials actually serve to support the students in their literary and experiential growth in the classroom.

The materials requested for this project are materials that my students would otherwise not have an opportunity to use.

Kindergarten students learn through actively experiencing the world around them, and I want to help my ELL kindergarten students by providing them with the tools they need to be successful now and for the rest of their school careers.
