Bringing Biology to Life -Genetics and Recycled Paper
My students need 6 items for the study of Genetics, which includes DNA model kits as well as a Bill Nye DVD. My students also need photocopies of worksheets, which will be made with the paper I have requested.
Just like it is impossible to drive a car without gas, it is also impossible to teach without the right supplies. I am a first year teacher in California and I currently teach five periods of Biology, ranging from 9th grade all the way through 11th grade. My students come from very diverse backgrounds with diverse skill levels. They also come from different socioeconomic levels, with many students receiving free lunches.
As a first year teacher there are many supplies that I need in order to run a classroom, but nothing is more valuable than paper. At the moment we have been allotted 5 reams of paper for the rest of the year. That means that I have to split 500 sheets of paper between 150 students- roughly 3 sheets a paper to each student. Many of my students cannot afford a lunch let alone their own binders, so the burden of obtaining these supplies lands on me.
Many of my students are also lacking an interest in science and I would love to spark that interest with some hands on activities as well as an interesting movies. The key to building a love of science is building a strong foundation, which can only happen if the students are engaged.
The following are the resources I have requested:
-A poster illustrating the genetic disorders that my students will do a research project on.
-A poster illustrating the cell cycle, which will be great for my English Language Learners.
-A genetics DVD that is current and entertaining
-Two boxes of recycled white multi-purpose paper.
-Two model kits of DNA that will allow my students to manipulate the pieces for a real hands-on experience.
The recycled paper ties nicely into our Ecology unit as we focus on conservation Biology. Students will not only learn about recycling and preserving the environment, but also see that they are making a small yet valuable difference by using recycled paper.
The video and the posters will illustrate concepts that are sometimes too hard to simply read about.
The model kits will help when we deal with concepts that are often too hard for students to grasp. My students will be able to build 3D DNA models instead of having to simply look at images in a book.
With your help, my students will be able to get the education that they deserve. You can ensure that my students will receive the same quality of education that their counterparts in well-off neighborhoods receive. Thank you VERY much.
