Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an English Language Development teacher for students grades K-5. Due to many factors, such as economic status, English being their second language, and delays in reading, my beautiful, smiling students struggle.
Despite their struggles, they never fail to bring joy to my classroom.
They show their P.R.I.D.E. daily- perseverance, respect, integrity, determination, and empathy. My students want so badly to reach the reading level of their peers and work diligently to do so. We are working hard to help our K-2 students reach their goals, so they are not so far behind once they reach 3rd grade, the all-important testing grade.
My Project
Our students are second language learners. Their parents want desperately to help them with school, but the language barrier presented makes it challenging for them to read-aloud in the academic language found at school. While they can continue reading to them in their first language, we hope to be able to allow families to borrow CD players, so that they can also listen to English read-along books. We previously purchased several books on CD that have been sitting unused in our classroom, because the portable CD players we have from the past require far too many frequent changes of batteries to function.
According to the website Reading Rockets, "Reading aloud is one of the most important things parents and teachers can do with children." When children listen to books, they augment important reading skills, expand vocabulary, and hear a model of fluent reading.
Most importantly, they begin to realize that reading can be entertaining.
Because many of our students are not only English Language Learners, but also from a low SES background, many do not even have access to internet at home (which would connect them to English read-alongs more readily). Thus, we would like to provide them with this opportunity to use more basic technology in order to expand their vocabulary and love for reading at home.
