My Project

Our 6th-grade class is embarking on an exciting journey to explore and celebrate Hawaiian culture through the lens of Makahiki, the ancient Hawaiian Olympics. We aim to create an immersive art project that will allow students to research, design, and create traditional Hawaiian game implements while learning about the cultural significance of these ancient sports. Through this project, students will develop their artistic skills and gain a deeper understanding of Hawaiian history, traditions, and the importance of physical activity in indigenous cultures.

This project will engage students in creating authentic Hawaiian game equipment such as 'ulu maika (bowling stones), pāhee (wooden javelins), and kōnane (strategy game boards) using various art mediums including clay, wood, and natural materials.

Students will learn traditional Hawaiian art techniques, study the historical significance of these games, and document their learning through digital photography and journaling. The finished pieces will be displayed in our school's cultural fair, where students will demonstrate the games and share their knowledge with the broader community.

The funds requested will help us purchase essential art supplies including air-dry clay, wet clay, a pottery wheel, seashells, shark teeth, twine, carving tools, natural feathers, wooden dowels, black and white glass stones, and paintbrushes. This project will impact 60 students directly and countless others through our cultural fair presentation. By supporting this initiative, you'll help us foster cultural awareness, promote hands-on learning, and preserve important Hawaiian traditions. Our students will gain invaluable insights into Hawaiian culture while developing critical thinking, research, and artistic skills that align with both our art and social studies standards.
