A classroom axolotl will not only spark curiosity in science and conservation but also serve as a powerful tool for social-emotional learning (SEL).
How It Supports SEL:
Encourages Responsibility & Compassion: Students will take turns caring for the axolotl, fostering ownership, teamwork, and empathy.
Creates a Calming Classroom Environment: Studies show that observing aquatic animals can reduce stress and anxiety, helping students self-regulate emotions.
Teaches Mindfulness & Patience: Watching the axolotl’s slow, peaceful movements provides an opportunity for mindfulness practices, aiding focus and relaxation.
Promotes Meaningful Discussions: The axolotl’s resilience (it can regenerate limbs!) can be a metaphor for a growth mindset, overcoming challenges, and learning from mistakes.
What We Need:
To ensure our axolotl thrives, we need an appropriate water filter, food, and habitat supplies. We also would love some books to read and research. With our love for our class pet, we will use the axolotl toys, stickers, and pencil toppers to show support and enthusiasm while learning something new! Your generous support will help bring this engaging, hands-on learning experience to life!
