I am a chemistry teacher at a small, underfunded school district in Ohio. My students come from a small town and the rural community that surrounds the town. Many of them are first-generation college-bound students. The access to the newest technology is very limited in our high school. Science materials are replaced infrequently, but any specialized technology to enhance the chemistry curriculum is well beyond our budget.
Integration of technology and everyday applications into the learning of chemistry can completely change students' perception of this central science class.
I love to challenge my students to see the application of chemistry into EVERYTHING around them. It is in this way that we will be able to prepare the future scientists to create new medicines, technologies, and products.
My Project
Chemistry is a science class that most parents are unable to help their children understand. The concepts are difficult for them to connect to their experience and many feel that it does not relate to their everyday lives. Once they have learned how to use them in class, the students will use the wireless pH probe to test the pH of household solutions. The iPad will run an app to interface with the wireless probe so that students can make and record their readings.
Using this technology, students will explore the acid and base characteristics of everyday substances with their families, enabling everyone to connect with chemistry.
The concept of pH applies to many everyday applications, from shampoo to drain cleaner. This will benefit the students by getting them an understanding of a chemical concept while involving family. It will benefit the families by empowering them to have an impact on their children's chemistry learning and allow them to see the educational use of technology.
