it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The students and families at our school are loving their new STEAM lab! This new space allows our students and families to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics through project-based learning. Our students are leaders in their learning and engage in the Engineering Design Process to help them answer their questions about the world! This year our students have engaged in PBL and inquiry around Civil Engineering, Robotic & Software Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. Our students are multilingual learners looking to make an impact on the world as Global Citizens. The STEAM lab is open to all students in Pre-K through Grade 5. In the STEAM lab, we celebrate mistakes because we know that when we do hard things, our brains grow!
Our newest unit is helping our students and families learn about Agricultural Engineering and Aeroponic Farming with our new Tower Garden.
While our Tower Garden comes with the basic supplies we needed for our first harvest, we will need additional materials so that our aeroponic garden becomes sustainable. The seed trays, vermiculite and rockwool will help the students learn about how seeds germinate. Because we want the students to make connections to nutrition, we will be showing the students how to chop up their harvest on our cutting boards so that they can sample the food they worked so hard to grow! In June, we will use the tubing to empty the well of the Tower Garden and we hope to use the pots to send home plants with our families. The scissors, sprayer and gloves will aid us with growing and harvest for years to come. Our aeroponic garden is providing us with a unique opportunity to bring SDGs #2 and #11 to life in the STEAM lab!
