This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Life in our room begins each day with a hug and a smile as my students rush into the classroom and check out our schedule for the day. They chatter excitedly among themselves as they pull out their morning work. What will be in store for them today?
I have an exciting group of First Graders this year.
They come to me full of curiosity and ready to tackle our curriculum from different vantage points. Some students were reading chapter books in Kindergarten while others are still working on learning their letter sounds. Some students are able to add 10's and 1's in their heads while others are still counting on their fingers. But all of my first graders are always ready for a challenge and love working in cooperative groups. As an Arts Magnet school, my students sing, act, and create to deepen their learning and demonstrate understanding. However, we have a gap in our classroom when it comes to putting technology into the hands of the students. We have 6 desktop computers in our class we use throughout the day for district mandated curriculum. This leaves very little time to access current technology and integrate the district's focus on 21st century skills into our daily curriculum.
My Project
The iPads will serve double purpose in my classroom. During our literacy and math instruction, students will use apps on the iPads to differentiate instruction. Struggling readers will work on phonics and word work while advanced readers can access more complicated texts and do research for projects. During our Inquiry Based Learning, students will use the iPads in cooperative groups for research, gathering information for a deeper understanding of classroom concepts, filming, documenting their learning, and to create presentations to share with the class and school community. Having the latest technology in the hands of my students will strengthen their work through collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity. The iPads will be beneficial for every student in the classroom.
Donations to our project will improve learning in my first grade classroom and develop 21st Century Skills in my students.
Having technology in the classroom and available for all students should be the norm in today's day and age. Thank you for making this a reality for my sweet first graders!
