I need this training to better serve my students and school community by teaching them mindfulness techniques and supporting their social-emotional growth.

My Students

I teach at a Waldorf inspired charter school in Monterey County. Our students travel from all over the county to attend our school, some traveling an hour each way. My students are primarily from working and middle-class families and about a third qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The students are a diverse group of children eager to learn, grow, and positively impact the world.

As a charter school, we attract many students that may not have had success in traditional public schools and our population of special needs is higher than the average elementary school.

In particular, children with ADHD and those on the autism spectrum make up a growing percentage of our school's population. Many families in our school want to avoid using medication for their children with attention disorders and hope that our school, which integrates movement throughout the school day with a focus on the whole child, will better support their child's development.

Given our student demographics, we have a group of children who would significantly benefit from a curriculum with a strong focus on self-care, social-emotional growth, yoga, and mindfulness practices.

My Project

This program will certify me as a yoga instructor and allow me to be qualified to lead wellness classes for all grade levels in our school community. The Breath for Change program is specifically designed to support educators in a 200 hour community-focused training to help the growth and transformation of lives and communities.

We will study powerful mind-body wellness practices like yoga, mindfulness, and breath work - and learn self-care, social-emotional learning, and community building strategies that positively impact our lives, classrooms, and schools.

Upon graduation, I will be certified to teach yoga and qualified to facilitate wellness and social-emotional learning in my school community
