Bring WWI to Life Through Graphic Novels

Help me give my students a class set of the graphic novel "The Harlem Hellfighters" by Max Brooks.

My Students

In my history class, we look to the past to understand who we are. We study both U.S. and world history, attempting to interpret the past through student-led research. Students discover history through a variety of rigorous activities and self-paced online lessons.

My middle school is a Title I school that mainly serves minority students.

We have a wide range of learners, from the exceptional children to the academically gifted. Our school was built in the 1920s and has a long tradition of hard work and community.

My Project

Helping students connect to the past isn't always easy. And getting them to read can be even harder. But through this amazing story of the all African American unit during WWI, students can do both through this incredible tale.

The combination of fantastic storytelling and captivating imagery will spark the imagination of my students.

We will spend class time every week to read through the book together. This will supplement our studies of WWI and give students a concrete example of combat during the war.

The book also deals with the struggles of African Americans during this time period and shows students that minority soldiers during this time truly had to fight two wars, at home and abroad.
