My Students

Help my students turn their wildest dreams into writing masterpieces. My students have so many good ideas and creative thoughts, with a few extra resources I can help my students turn their ideas into wonderful works of writing!

I teach 26 Fifth graders at one of the charter schools that opened in Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina.

They attend a school with a mission to embrace diversity and acceptance of others. They are African American, Vietnamese, and Hispanic. Many of the students come from homes where often issues related to poverty are focused on, while education is less of a concern. They each have unique learning styles and many are visual and kinesthetic learners. They have overcome so many obstacles already in their young lives, but they have high hopes and optimism that they can achieve success if they work hard. They are children who will prove that no disaster can stop someone from going places, doing great things, and achieving their dreams.

My Project

Imagine walking into a class where students are actively engaged in the writing process. Some are editing their stories, while others are brainstorming ideas for their next great story, and a few are putting the finishing touches on their latest written works. This is my vision for writing, and one day soon I hope to make this dream a reality. My students have wonderful ideas for writing, but when it comes to the mechanics of writing, many of my students are unable to transform their ideas into great written works. It is my goal to set up Writer's Workshop where my class can focus on writing skills, and spend time learning to edit, revise, and publish their work to share with classmates and parents. The materials for this project will allow me to set up a wonderful writer's workshop, where my students can master the skills they need to become great writers.

Giving my students the tools like prompt boxes, take it to your seat writing centers, overhead daily paragraph editing transparencies, writing charts, grammar and four square writing charts and a chart stand to have Writers Workshop will help them for the rest of their lives.

They will go to middle school knowing that they have become better writers and will be able to focus more on bringing their creative works to life. Help our class learn to write, and feel great knowing that the next great author may be writing his or her first wonderful stories in my class.
