This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Who looks ready to choose a drum?" When I tell my student-musicians we're getting ready for a percussion activity, their engagement shifts into high gear. I want my students to participate in a variety of joyful musical experiences, including creating music as part of a drum circle.
I serve a diverse population of brilliant kids.
My students qualify for universal free lunch, and few of them are able to purchase their own instruments or take private music lessons outside of school. Our music program and school as a whole seeks to provide nurturing, wrap-around services that empower our kids. I find that my kids flourish and achieve when given resources and guidance by caring adults.
My Project
Through "Bring Us Bongo Boy," instructors from Bongo Boy Recreational Music Center will lead my students in a Grade Level Workshop. Every student will play a percussion instrument in a drum circle. The leaders will establish a rhythmic "groove," and help students add varied rhythms to create a large-scale rhythmic performance. Students will learn about musical teamwork, rhythm, and self-expression.
Last year, our school received a grant to substantially expand our tubano drum collection so we could better explore rhythm, percussion, and drum circle activities.
Through "Bring Us Bongo Boy," my kids will experience both familiar and new rhythmic activities on a massive scale. Students who may struggle can be swept up in the momentum of success that a large drum circle performance provides. I believe "Bring Us Bongo Boy!" will help students feel more connected to music and to others.
