This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Being a teen was never easy. And even though it was written long before my students were born, "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton is still the book that kids connect to the most.

In my three Language Arts classes, I run across kids from all different walks of life... I'll have a Dally, a Johnny, and of course, a Ponyboy Curtis.

One thing that my students have in common with each other, is no matter where they are from, at some point they've had a difficult time fitting in and being themselves. They need outlets for their thoughts and need to be able to see that they're not alone. They need to see some of the struggles and issues that they are dealing with in a novel, and the novel that does it the best, is "The Outsiders."

My Project

I am teaching three energetic 7th grade classes this year, which means our featured novel will be the popular classic, "The Outsiders" by S.E. Hinton. This is my 20th year teaching and although my students change, their love for "The Outsiders" does not waiver.

In a school where over 90% of the population is considered to be minority, they enjoy reading about the struggle of the Greasers and their quest to belong.

My school only has one class set (30 copies) of "The Outsiders," which causes many teaching problems and obstacles. I think I did too good of a job teaching this novel in the past, because many other teachers are now jumping on the bandwagon and are interested in teaching this book. On one hand - that's great! It's a fantastic book that teaches the kids a lot. But on the other hand, trying to get my hands on these books for my classes is now near impossible. Besides that inconvenience, with all the extra hands on the books, they are now wearing down faster that ever before.

In my class, I teach "The Outsiders" by way of a read-aloud. During this process, each child has a book in front of them, at their own desk, at all times. This provides me with the opportunity to stop in the middle of a chapter and ask questions or give assignments to my students. By us all being on the same page at the same time, students can assist their classmates with difficulties that they are experiencing and discuss interesting and exciting parts of the novel. As of now, I don't have the books to do this. However, by fulfilling this proposal, you'd make this all possible once again.
