Bring the Music Back

My Students

Not too long ago, music education was a regular part of the school day. Teachers led the class in songs throughout the school day, music teachers stopped by at least once a week to teach about pitch or rhythm, and some children even had the opportunity to play in the school band.

But priorities have changed.

Teachers must be focused on standards, music teachers have gone the way of the dinosaurs, and instruments haven't been seen at our middle schools in a decade. Some children have the ability to learn about music outside of school, but the children at our school do not have the opportunities or the finances to afford music lessons. The majority of our students are English language learners who are first or second generation immigrants that come from low-income families. Their families are understandably more worried about getting food on the table than paying for extracurricular, and expensive, activities like music education.

My Project

Our students' knowledge of music is limited to the "musical" groups promoted by Disney and Nickelodeon. There is a whole world of music out there that our students have never heard. We will be able to use the musical bingo activities to teach an after school music appreciation class. But we don't want to stop with music appreciation. We also want to give our students the opportunities to learn the basics of music by offering beginning voice and recorder after school classes.

Without support for music education in public elementary schools, only students who come from middle and upper class backgrounds will have opportunity to study music.

Several research studies have also shown that music enhances learning. Incorporating music in schools can also encourage students who might ordinarily be passive learners to become active participants in the classroom. No matter how you look at it, music is vital to our students. Please help us bring the music back to our school.
