My Students
Teaching K-6, many of my students are not only starting school for the first time, but also starting a new life in a new country, learning a new language! The eager children come in everyday so excited to learn and often hit struggles because they do not understand the language or the cultural communication. Throw in the low-income/high poverty component (70% plus free/reduced), and you can better understand the multitude of challenges my students face, both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many interferences, my students love to learn and grasp onto every opportunity to build learning experiences! I have the great opportunity of giving my students their first real English learning experience and instill the love of learning in them right from the start! The importance of using manipulatives, making relevant connections to their lives, and providing them with the best instructional resources and strategies is imperative to their success.
My Project
The materials will be used to build the English language and begin to teach the students the foundations of phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The realistic objects and photos will be used to make connections between English words and Spanish words, so they can build the new language on something familiar.
The interactive manipultives, games, activity boards and interactive resources will be used to make relevant connections to explore and teach the students how letters connect to make sounds, blends, words, word patterns, word families, and vocabulary.
Repetition, peer collaboration, and small group activities, along with the interactive/relevant resources are crucial in building a safe environment in which the students feel comfortable learning without the worry of making mistakes.
Once they begin to build their background knowledge and understand print concepts, they can then apply their skills in reading, writing, and communicating their ideas.
