The materials will be used to build the English language and begin to teach the students the foundations of phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. The realistic objects and photos will be used to make connections between English words and Spanish words, so they can build the new language on something familiar. The interactive manipultives, games, activity boards and interactive resources will be used to make relevant connections to explore and teach the students how letters connect to make sounds, blends, words, word patterns, word families, and vocabulary. Repetition, peer collaboration, and small group activities, along with the interactive/relevant resources are crucial in building a safe environment in which the students feel comfortable learning without the worry of making mistakes. Once they begin to build their background knowledge and understand print concepts, they can then apply their skills in reading, writing, and communicating their ideas.
