My students need a boombox for our gym so we can listen to music while we exercise.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day we come in and get right to work. When my students enter the gymnasium, it is non-stop movement. We begin with an intense 5 minute run/calisthenic workout to jump start their engines (and I do the workout along with them). We then get to our lesson and end with nice static stretches.
The students at our school are given a chance, which is rare in the inner city of Philadelphia, at college.
We are a college prep school, teaching the students how to become successful not only now, but in the future. Students mainly come from low income urban environments, where not only are they statistically fighting the odds of going to college, but also even graduating high school. We give them a shot at making it. 75 percent of our 9th graders enter at least 5 years behind in reading and math, but by the end of their first year 86 percent of those students will catch up. 84 percent of students graduate in four years compared to the Philadelphia district school average of 60 percent. 94 percent of graduates go on to college and 84 percent of graduates who enrolled as first year college students returned. Our school guarantees a safe environment, proactive in peer mediation to resolve disputes before they escalate.
My Project
In my gymnasium, I like to keep things upbeat and fun. I do this by constantly having music pumping so the students have no choice but to feel the beat (I dare you to listen to tribal house music and not feel the need to dance). Every single unit and activity we do, there is music...until recently. At our school, we share a portable speaker unit with everyone else, meaning: if the board needs to use it for a presentation, no music in the gym. If there is an assembly, no music in the gym. If the unit breaks, no music in the gym. The latter just recently happened...which is sad because our warm up is now dishwater dull without any sort of music for my students to listen to. This boombox will be dedicated to the gym only, and is not only durable, but loud, wireless, and bluetooth ready. Having our own sound system will help us not feel like we're a 2nd class subject. Help us get the music back into our gym and motion back to our students!
With your donation, we will be able to get music back into our warm ups, have music during game play, and just bring fun into our gym again.
Imagine you're at the gym and you forgot you iPod, that's what has been like for us lately. It can be a struggle for kids to want to workout as it is, but putting music in the background at least makes that struggle more fun and easier to forget. Please give us the gift of music once again!
