I love teaching this age because no matter what my students have been through, each one still comes to my class with at least a tiny bit of wonder and anticipation.
These children are coming to 4th grade still impressionable, still moldable, still hopeful about what school can do for them and what they can achieve in this world.
There are some numbers I could give to tell you about them,
Parents with higher education= 0
XXX08 Zip code= high poverty, high crime neighborhood
Free/reduced lunch= 100%
but that data just doesn't do justice to what these scholars can do!
My students are filled with PURE POTENTIAL!
My Project
The instruments I have chosen reflect my students' cultures of origin. When placed in their hands, these instruments bring rhythm and fun into our everyday learning experiences!
Music is the heartbeat of life.
By bringing music into the classroom, we embrace what we already know - music is good for the soul! We will use these instruments daily; they will not gather dust as students strive for the privilege of playing percussion for our lessons, celebrations, academic chants, and cheers.
Students will be awake (!!) and engaged as we punctuate our learning with percussion! I recently visited the Ron Clark Academy, and I loved how drums were interwoven into the lessons spontaneously and yet seamlessly. If you've ever visited a church where the congregation was vocally and physically participating in the preacher's sermon, you'll know what I mean! The children did not sit passively as the teacher did all the talking. The discussion was dynamic, alive -- at any given time, the teacher might start a sentence and the entire class finished it by launching into a song that contained more content than a textbook page! Accompanied by the drumming, the students energetically stood up and rhythmically declared what they knew. No heads on desks, no boring lectures to be immediately forgotten. Music makes things stick!
