Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in grade K-5. I have 12-15 kids from each grade level. They have difficulty decoding grade level, which impacts all academic areas. They require Tier 3 instruction to help them bridge the gaps they have in terms of reading. Each grade comes to my classroom 30 min per day for intensive instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension. Many are visual learners and love comics.
As many exhibit difficulty with attention and remaining on task, graphic and comics will spark their imagination and motivate them to keep on reading.
They all want to be successful and improve their reading skills but traditional instruction has not been effective in improving their skills.
My Project
Comics and graphic books use multiple modes of expression which will motivate and support my struggling readers, especially visual learners. As the text is manageable it helps lower their stress as many exhibit anxiety when encountering text. The visuals and topics of the comics are relevant to their interests which increases their motivation to engage with the text, and persevere in decoding and comprehension.
The visuals and short text will allow them to feel successful as it will support their ability to visualize and understand complicated ideas (21th literacy century skill)
The graphic novels are cross-curricular and which allows an opportunity to make connections to other subjects and their interests.
