Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year, my students have competed in a Hackathon and won! The judges were inspired by their idea for a mobile application, a product called SafeBlok, which was designed specifically to address the dangers present in their neighborhood.
Energized by their victory, the students wanted to continue work on the application.
There was just one problem: they lack computers!
My students are brilliant and resilient future engineers. They take the most rigorous math and science courses available to them. They take their passion for STEM into the community. They complete internships and research projects. They articulate the challenges of learning to program computers without sufficient access to a personal computer, or even a computer lab at all.
My students want to use online programs like Code Academy, Khan Academy, and the myriad educational resources designed to teach them to computer program.
My Project
My students will be able to use these Chromebooks before, during, and after school to use online software to teach them how to program. Three laptops will allow the students who have already been exposed to computer science through activities like the Hackathon to practice their skills. It will contribute to a mobile lab that I am trying to build to offer computer science courses to students in the future (currently there are 2 computers). My students want computer science as a part of their schedule.
Your contribution will allow aspiring young engineers to learn the skills that they will need to be competitive in a quickly-changing job market.
The laptops allow me to engage more students with computer science, which thus far has been a life-changing practice for my students. These computers would be the start to a computer-science program for the most deserving students.
