Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My third graders are an awesome group of kids. Even though our school serves many students who come from high-poverty, low socioeconomic families, my class shows up every day ready and eager to learn. The majority are English Language Learners and building their communication skills is so important.
At home, many of my students' native language is Spanish so the only time my students can build those English speaking skills is at school.
Having as many opportunities to communicate with one another in our classroom is the best way to build my students' English proficiency and confidence when speaking.
My Project
I want to be able to provide some time and materials in our week for STEM activities. I can make the time, all I need are the materials. It is important that English Language Learners practice their speaking skills often, however so much time is focused on math and language arts that sometimes science is pushed aside. Having these STEM bins would be an easy way to incorporate fun and engaging activities in our days that require communication within a group.
STEM bins are all about building critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration skills in a way that kids enjoy and want to participate in.
The "task cards" provided with these kits will guide students to design and create items with various materials. They will have to think quickly and work together in order to complete the objective. It is a hand- on approach that allows students to explore while learning.
These activities do not take very long at all and are easy to set up. They also use everyday items like paper towel rolls, tape, index cards, rubber bands, legos, etc. The students will have fun while learning and building interpersonal skills. Help my third graders learn and explore with STEM bins!
