My Students

Desk and chair learning is so last century. Learning in our classroom takes my students up and out of the room to testing engineering projects on the playground, to recording Science data in our STEM lab or to documenting learning while on a field trip.

This year I am fortunate to have 19 highly inquisitive 8 years from a variety of ethic and sociol-economic backgrounds.

They are a highly collaborative group, especially when it comes to problem solving and data collection. We are a public Title 1 elementary school in Southern California and the only elementary school in our district to have a dedicated STEM lab.

My Project

Imagine a STEM-focus classroom where learning is not confined by the classroom walls. iPads in the classroom are the perfect realization of this dream. iPads allow students to get away from their desks and conduct a variety of STEM-related activities in a variety of locales and situations. This might be taking an iPad to the STEM lab to program a robot, or using the iPad to record changes in weather or the sun's position at various places on the school campus. Having a iPad could mean having a resource to use on field trips to document learning in multimedia formats to use in a research project. Students using iPads in and out of the classroom will gain a deeper understanding of the broad range of tablet computing capabilities beyond playing games or sending an email.

School may be the only place that technology access takes place.

Having iPads in the classroom would mean greater access for all children. It would mean that access need not stop at the classroom door. Students could take the technology with them anywhere to extend and document their learning. Individuals or small groups could work on projects then share their products created on the iPads the rest of the class.
