My students need a math balance, a butterfly pavilion, and insect and fossil kits to gain a richer understanding of math and science.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
To truly learn science, my students must behave as scientists. They will have to observe, analyze, hypothesize, and experiment. They will not be able to do so by just reading. They will need to observe real living things or investigate the remains of living things from long ago.
I teach a very diverse group of students.
Culturally, my students have roots in Mexico, Central and South America, India, the Philippines, Korea, Egypt, Iran, Belgium and various parts of the United States. Thirteen of my twenty-five students are English language learners. Most of my students come from working class families with limited resources to invest in their education, however, they are hard workers and extremely eager to learn.
My Project
In second grade, students learn about the life cycles of different animals. They also learn that fossils provide evidence about the plants and animals that lived long ago. One way students learn this is by reading interesting, well-illustrated books about animal life cycles and fossils.
A second way is for them to raise and care for animals, such as Painted Lady Butterflies and ladybugs. As they do so, they get to observe, record, discuss, write, and hypothesize about their life cycles. When the living things they are studying are no longer around, the fossils, or replicas of these fossils, provide a rich source for investigation.
I have books on insect life cycles and dinosaur fossils for my students to read. I need your help to obtain the butterflies, ladybugs, and fossils that will bring the content of these books to life!
Your donations will allow my students to learn science by being scientists.
They will help bring science to life and enrich my students' learning. I thank you in advance for your generosity!
