My school is a Title I public school located in NE Philadelphia. Our student population is very diverse with approximately 25% of students receiving special education services and 20% of our students are English Language Learners. 100% of our students qualify for free and/or reduced lunch.
Our school is situated on 88 acres that is used for a broad variety of activities.
We have 30 chickens and anticipate the arrival of some goats this spring to live in one of our courtyards. We have environmental engineering, urban agriculture, health-related technology, and horticulture programs for our students to participate in as upperclassmen. As a 9th-grade special education teacher, I receive a lot of students who have had minimal access to science classes in middle school and are missing many of the skills they need to be successful in higher-level science classes. My students are curious and want to learn. They become more interested in the world around them and how things work when they have access to hands-on activities.
My Project
This summer, I have been selected to attend the Pathfinders 2020 Summer Institute where I will learn to bring new lessons and skills on computer programming, engineering and design and machines to my classroom. I’m a special education teacher in a Title I school in Philadelphia, PA and hands-on learning is so important to my students. I’m excited to have this opportunity, but as a single parent to three kids of my own, I cannot afford this opportunity without the assistance of generous donors. I’m looking forward to attending this conference and engaging my students in a new activity in the fall.
