My Project

“Bringing Play Back to K” is a project that would benefit all 98 Kindergarten students at Strawberry Hill School. We would use the play materials provided by this grant to implement play-based learning centers in each of the 5 Kindergarten classes. The rationale for choosing this project is due in part to new legislation from the state. The State of Connecticut has proposed a bill (HB0688) which calls for changes to education, including the implementation of play-based learning.

Here is a synopsis of the bill:

To incorporate play-based learning in grades prekindergarten to five, inclusive, for the purpose of improving the development of students' executive functions and reducing the negative impact of high levels of childhood anxiety.

This bill would go into effect next year (i.e. July 1st 2024) and would require daily play based learning experiences in pre-K and K and play based learning would be recommended in grades 1-5).

However as Kindergarten teachers, we are thrilled to bring play back to Kindergarten classrooms now. We have seen how the lack of play has negatively impacted children of this age (i.e. anxiety, behavior concerns, short attention span, etc.) and how students are often lacking early play skills (i.e. sharing, oral language, etc.) as technology has increased and play time has decreased. Young children learn best through play. We would like to bring play back to K during Literacy through centers that stimulate students’ interests and provide developmentally appropriate modes of learning. Students will explore our units (Plants, Seasons, Kings & Queens, Native Americans, etc.) through play. If this grant is funded, our 5 Kindergarten teachers will be able to plan for play that encourages creativity, oral language, fine motor development, and more!
