My Students
Hello! Our school is made up of 1,500 students in grades 6, 7, and 8. We are in a thriving, yet Title I, community in Queens in NYC. We have many high achieving students whose families are native New Yorkers, but we also have many who are English Language Learners whose families are hardworking immigrants. We also have a special education population as well. I'm the model teacher with a lab classroom, and I work to try new innovative teaching ideas so that my colleagues can see it in action before they try it themselves. I attend amazing PDs with revolutionary teaching strategies, but I often need technology to implement those, and this would allow me to use these wonderful techniques on my students. This computer will be entirely for student use, and a single computer can mean a world of difference.
My Project
There are such amazing websites and apps for education, but it is so hard for us to use computer carts in our building. We currently share 90 laptops among 1,500 students. If I had one tablet per group of students, I could use Google Classroom, Edmodo, Tweet authors and politicians, and more! We are a Title I school which means many of our students and impoverished and do not have an internet capable device at home, so I cannot use Google Classroom because I don't want to embarrass any students who need to admit that they'd need a paper version of an assignment. We regularly have Socratic Seminars, and students need to research in order to have information to bring to the discussion.
