My students need tools (iPad Air, case, keyboard case and a Samsung tablet) to create their own apps and test them out on real devices. Kinect and a webcam will enhance our video game design using Scratch.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are coding, creating their own apps, and creating their own video games. My room currently has desktop computers which have limited our ability to move forward in the direction we've been going. We need devices with wifi to take our next steps.
My school is a middle school in a district that falls into the "H" Educational Reference Group, which means we have a large number of students who receive free or reduced lunch.
We have an ethnically diverse group of students. I have heterogeneous groups of students who have a wide range of abilities and experience with technology.
Most of the students have a high interest in technology.
My school has clusters of academics, but the technology in the classrooms is limited. There is usually only 1 computer per room. There are 2 computer labs that are unavailable most of the year due to testing. My students have limited opportunities to use computers at school outside of my class. There is a new policy that permits students to use their own devices when it supports the lesson.
My Project
My students will be using the webcam and Kinect to expand on our video game design using Scratch. Scratch is a block-based programming language from MIT. The new version of scratch enables students to create games that interact with their body movements.
My students will also be making apps using MIT App Inventor 2. The students will be able to link the iPad and the Android tablet to the same wireless network to test their apps live.
Students will be learning computer programming concepts such as conditionals, algorithms, variables, abstractions, and functions. Students will also learn about the demand for computer programmers in the job market.
Donations to this project will improve my classroom by enabling students to expand on their programming to include motion-controlled games and will enable them to test apps they create.
Some students having been exposed to computer programming in my classroom will find that they have an affinity for it and will pursue it in the future.
