We are a third grade classroom that really enjoys inquiry and project-based learning, and we often incorporate the engineering design process into our work. We are very artistic, creative, and have lots of ideas that we love to see come to life!
Our class is made up of 24 third grade students that come from a variety of cultural backgrounds.
Some of us speak Spanish in the home and we are all learning Spanish here at school. Our school is a Pre-K - 8th grade academy with a PBL/STEAM focus. We are in Wake County, about 15 minutes from downtown Raleigh. My students are in need of some Legos to support our mathematics program and to offer a creative outlet for a whole lot of creative minds!
My Project
At the start of the school year, I checked out five boxes of Legos and some baseplates to use for some STEM and team building activities. Nine months later, we still have those boxes in our classroom, and they are put to use EVERY single day. The kids love them, and there are so many awesome ways to use them.
This incredibly versatile tool can be incorporated into all kinds of classroom learning, but, most of all, they offer a terrific creative outlet for the children.
They've been used to model all kinds of mathematics concepts, become artifacts for our Heroes Museum, and are the source of daily inventions and fun. Many of our favorite classroom photos feature students proudly showing off their creations.
We've come up with this project because we'd like to permanently add Legos to our classroom environment. It doesn't seem fair to keep others from borrowing them from the school library when they are needed for lessons. Because we use them so much, it really makes sense for us to have some of our own. You can help enhance our classroom experience by donating to our project today!
