This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My eighth grade science students are special because they are gifted, enthusiastic kids from traditionally under-served populations and culturally diverse backgrounds. Many will be first generation college students. Thirty two are AVID students and forty are gifted magnet students.

I want my eighth graders to be confident in science as they head off to high school.

They will benefit from the donation of a scientific hot plate and calculators as we explore chemistry and the chemical changes brought about by heat.

My Project

Today at the CDE I learned the importance of students actually applying STEM knowledge gained as opposed to just reading about it. I can't wait for my students to conduct hands-on chemistry experiments with the hot plate, make observations, and analyze the data using their calculators. Project-based learning with scientific tools will develop their understanding of so many chemical concepts.

The experiences of forming crystals, determining boiling points and melting points, learning about chemical properties and changes, temperature, thermal energy and heat, witnessing vaporization and comparing the changes of states of a variety of liquids may inspire a future chemist!
