Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are curious, hard-working, critical-thinking, problem-solvers, who have a strong desire to express themselves creatively. We are an elementary Title 1, Magnet school, in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, participating in our 2nd year of the NYC Computer Science for All Software Enginneering Program Jr. pilot. We service a diverse student population from a variety of cultural, ethnic and economic backgrounds. Our school is committed to exposing all students to computer science learning in ways that are purposeful and fun.
Research shows that there is an underrepresentation of women & people of color in the field of computer science.
Through this project our pre-kindergarten students will get to learn computer science through the hands-on experience of programming a robot without screen time.
My Project
Students have been using the Code-a-pillar and Cubetto robots. They are really enjoying working collaboratively to build their persistence and develop their computational thinking.
This project includes Botley robots which will help students have more options to expand their programming possibilities, while respecting the no-screen time guidelines for pre-kindergarten students.
Having a variety of materials will offer students a multitude of ways to engage with these concepts and skills.
Many studies have found that children, especially at this developmental stage, learn best through play. Help support their journey of discovery through play by funding materials that will be both fun and educational. Additionally, these games/activities can all be played in pairs/groups which will foster students social/emotional growth through collaborative learning experiences.
