Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is a place where the learning needs of all students are taken into consideration. My students are from incredibly diverse cultural backgrounds, bringing a variety of learning styles, interests, and experiences. Many students are nontraditional learners, therefore differentiation is essential.
The students in my class are economically disadvantaged and have not always had an opportunity to learn in alternative ways.
Public schools tend to be set up for a more traditional learner, which in this day and age is no longer effective for a majority of students. They love the freedom to learn in a variety of ways, even if that sometimes means a more non-traditional style of curriculum delivery and seating arrangement. Students respond more hands-on/discovery learning and less text book use.
Implementing the Lucy Calkins Units of Study in both reading and writing requires that all students needs be met at just their level. The reading program requires a classroom library of no less than 500 books. My students love to get out of their seats and seek alternative areas for reading. I would like to provide those opportunities and resources with an updated library.
My Project
These books are important for my students because, in my classroom, they are expected to each keep a book bag of 7 - 10 books at their desk at any given time. That is over 300 books at a time at varied levels. My classroom library just does not have the volume to support this currently.
The students will be able to take their book bags home each and every night to ensure that they are surrounded by good literature even when they are at home.
Many students in my class come from a home where a language other than English is spoken. Accessing books can sometimes be a challenge for many families, especially at a designated reading level.
My classroom library will provide each and every student with access to the books necessary for their individual progress.
Reading great fiction and nonfiction could mean the difference between success and failure. Building a love of reading is a life long skill that I love to nurture in each and every student who enters my classroom.
