About My Students
My students and I enjoy reading and analyzing all types of books - fiction and nonfiction alike. Books allow them to use their imaginations in order to create a picture inside their heads, and a good book can create lifelong learners and true critical thinkers. Some students like reading on their devices, but most students, believe it or not, like to actually have a book in their hand. When Alex and Emily came to me looking for book recommendations, I brought them to my class library. The books have seen better days and newer books have piqued the interest of teens. They asked, "Can we do a Donors Choose project to get more classroom books?" I told them that they were in charge!
Books are the windows to our souls. They allow us to imagine different worlds, think critically, analyze and evaluate different situations, and to empathize with others. They make us laugh and cry within only a couple of pages. They allow us to escape the reality of life and they say the things that we didn't even know that we wanted to say. This classroom library will improve our reading skills, help us become lifelong learners and readers, and teach us that there is more to life than the world we live in. These books will keep us engaged and our minds active.
In Their Own Words
With this project, we are trying to create a classroom library filled with modern literature that excites students and makes them want to read. Reading is so important to life and it should be interesting to us. These books are the new modern literature that we crave to devour in our free time.
We are the leaders of this entire project. We brought it to our teacher, we created and shopped for the books, and we are currently writing this project up in our free time. We will unpack, label, and share our love for reading with our classmates. We will help to create readers out of our peers.
This project is important because reading is an essential skill to life. Helping our teacher get a new class library with modern books will help get our classmates interested in reading, which in turn will help them throughout their entire life-fluency, comprehension, problem-solving, inferring, critical thinking, analyzing, empathizing, etc., the list can go on and on.
