My Students

My students are eager readers! As first graders they make large jumps throughout a school year. They need books that have a sentence on the page to chapter books! They quickly read through books and are always on the search for something new and exciting! My students are located in the North-East section of Philadelphia. We also have a high ESL population. At our school, we have a very large diverse community of students.

My Project

In my first grade classroom we are studying non-fiction in reading and writing. The best part about the Lucy Calkin's curriculum is it invites students to bring fun to reading. To end the topic I want to bring our non-fiction unit to life! To begin, we are studying and writing all about lions. I want to use the lanyards to turn students into zoo keepers. They each will become a lion expert at the Philadelphia Zoo. Then students will use sticky notes, index cards and dark markers to research lions independently. We will use reusable folders to present our writing to our classmates. Students can edit each others writing with expo marking through the sleeves. This will allow for writing paper to not be damaged. With another year impacted by COVID restrictions, I hope this project will be funded to bring some fun back to the first grade classroom!
