Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Special Education teacher. My students are part of a self-contained autism school program. They have a love for learning; however, they have severe speech, language and cognitive delays. They are nonverbal and it’s hard for them to learn socially acceptable cues and behaviors.
My students can learn when presented with visual supports and concrete objects.
All the lessons are individualized to meet their IEP (Individualized Education Program) goals. Picture cues and the use of manipulatives keep the children focused. My students can learn; however, they learn differently and require a tremendous amount of visual support to help them reach their potential.
My students love using hands-on manipulatives to help them in learning. My children remain engaged when using the concrete money manipulatives which results in learning and a feeling of accomplishment.
My Project
Students in my class would greatly benefit from a printer for a variety of reasons.
The students in my class are on the autism spectrum, and it's essential for them to have printed color visuals.
I would use the printer to print schedules, transition cues, reinforcement boards and other materials that will help them throughout the school day.
The digital camera will be great for taking photographs of the children in their natural surroundings during the school day. To improve socially acceptable cues and behaviors I will include my students’ photographs to work on Social Stories that are geared to appropriate individual situations. With the use of a digital camera, I will have the ability to create personalized social stories using photos, text, and audio messages. These stories can be used to promote individualized social skills relevant to each child’s behaviors.
Having a colored printer with extra ink and digital camera in the classroom will not only be totally amazing, but it will also greatly improve the communication skills of my students. Thank you for considering our project.
