Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About My Students
My class is comprised of very motivated, special education students. My students come from less than ideal homes and in most situations, school is the warmest part of their day. Despite their personal situations, they come to school each day wanting to learn. Isaac seeks guidance in school.
My students decided they wanted a guitar in our class when they were asked what their interests were. Music class has traditionally been a time for students to listen to music and analyze it, as opposed to actually playing instruments. This year, however, the students want to learn an instrument.
For students in our program, school is a place for them to find structure and love when they rarely receive these fundamental elements at home. A guitar will allow them to practice self-discipline but at the same time experience warmth and emotional complexity. Most of us take the presence of these elements in our lives for granted, while they are desired by our students.
In Their Own Words
We just think that a guitar in our classroom would be fun and great too. We want to be able to play it and learn notes and other things from Mr. Harvey. We think music is important for us. -Isaac
Mr. Harvey can play the guitar pretty good and we want to do it. We are going to be able to play it all the time. When there is a crisis we can have someone play it too. There's always a good time for it. -Angel
Without music things are boring. We even have music playing when we read and write. We want to learn how to play it. If we can play music and listen to it, its the best! Guitars are something we want in our class. - Darnelle
