This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine looking forward to participating in a music program where you get to learn to read music and perform for your parents on stage, but discovering that the program no longer exists due to budget cuts. This is what has happened at our school, and others around the country. What can be done?

My students are eager fourth graders who have proven they will rise to the occasion when a challenge is put in front of them.

In spite of their low-economic status and parents who are not literate in English (some are not literate in their own language), these students love school and soak up everything like sponges. Most of my students are English Language Learners who have maintained their primary language with the school's encouragement towards bilingualism for all. For the first time, many of them are being held to achieve more than ever before as mandates from bureaucrats, who seem to ignore all the current research on how children learn, impose unrealistic expectations on them. There are periods during the trimester when students (8-year-olds) are taking 3 high-stakes tests in one week! Needing an outlet, many of the students are involved in extracurricular activities such as sports, drill team, student council or other after school clubs, avoiding the ever-present lure of gangs.

My Project

With the climate of budget cuts looming over their little heads, I try to keep the harsh realities at bay by including lots of arts-based activities in the classroom. Each of our trimesters is dedicated to one area of the arts: dance in trimester one, drawing/painting in trimester two, and music in trimester three. After our successful dance and art presentations in the first two trimesters, it is now time to prepare for trimester three. Those students who may not have found their niche in dance and art have been chomping at the bit to start music, but the funding is gone. Having been a teacher-participant in previous classes, I am more than equipped to teach the students myself, but lack the materials, such as recorders. This instrument is what has been used to teach students how to read music, play simple to more complex pieces and, eventually, to have students compose their own music. The joy and discipline that students develop from this experience is priceless.

With the support of DonorsChoose, my students will not be cheated by a system that on the one hand lauds the importance of the arts in schools, and with the other hand takes away the resources necessary to maintain them.

Help make the playing field level for urban children who so desperately need the opportunity to compete with their peers from higher socioeconomic groups. It instills confidence and creates a more balanced society of individuals who can prosper and, in turn, give back.
