This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range in age from 3-5 years old. What a great time to be in the life of someone whose only goal in life is to discover the world around them! Every day I greet my students and they look at me with such joy. It is enough to make you want to skip your morning cup of coffee, they perk you right up. As I am a special education teacher, my students have specific needs that are addressed in my class. These range from working on communication skills, Autism, or severe disabilities.
My school is close to a military base and all of my students belong to military families that are currently serving.
Our school is a shortstop before their families are reassigned to a new area. The time in which they are here is a time I can help give them a sense of routine and normalcy.
My Project
I have selected items which are larger and easier to use for those with smaller hands. Items like the motorized building set allow students to explore engineering concepts. While the root viewer gives us a front seat to life science concepts like the life cycle of a plant. The magnifiers and eye drops will give us an opportunity to explore physical science.
Children are curious from birth and these STEM activities in school give them the opportunity to explore that natural curiosity.
This year in my classroom, I would like to set up a science center to expose my students to the idea science is all around them. We have started having "Science Friday" to draw our focus to a specific scientific concept, but I would love to have readily available items for my students to explore every day.
