Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach AP Calculus at one of the largest public high schools in New York. My school is a high needs high school - over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. We serve a diverse population consisting of many recent immigrants from all over the world and my amazing students have worked hard against all odds to make it to AP Calculus.
As an AP Calculus teacher, I need to keep up with latest technology to provide my students with the education they need to compete with AP Calculus students across the country and adequately prepare them for college level mathematics. Working in one of the last large schools (over 4000 students) in New York, I've always dealt with a shortage of supplies. This problem became even more acute a few months back when the school budget was cut 3% after the school year had already started.
My students are dealing with shortages of so many things. I'm filling the gap as best I can in an attempt to prepare these students for college. Last month I managed to get a color printer donated to my classroom and I have loved being able to design worksheets, create color diagrams, write informational handouts, and then simply print the materials out for my students. Just a few days ago we decorated each of our graphing calculators with a personalized color sticker as a good luck charm for the AP exam.
Unfortunately, the toner the printer came with has run out! We need refills so that we can continue to bring color to calculus. Additionally, I am requesting colored pens so that students can add color to hand drawn diagrams and color coordinate notes and review sheets.
I want to be able to reach my students and keep them engaged. An engaged high school student is more likely to construct the background knowledge and skills he or she needs to meet the goal of passing the AP exam and continuing on with math in college.
