This project is fully funded

I am a speech teacher employed at a NYC special education school, working with students with autism. My primary objectives for the students would be to integrate and generalize their language, as well as improve the performance of social behaviors. Children with autism are typically strong visual learners. The use of computers has proved to be a powerful and successful visual tool. I am presently setting up a project through the use of Video Modeling. Video modeling is a scientifically validated strategy that capitalizes on their visual strengths in order to teach functional skills and appropriate social behavior. Students watch the video repeatedly and are then encouraged to imitate the behavior they observe. The primary benefit of this technology to the educational process is that it allows information to be presented visually, which greatly facilitates learning. Laptops are currently used to view the videos independently. An LCD projector would allow for group participation. Children with autism typically lack the initiative to partake in social situations. With consistent use of the LCD projector, the students can become exposed to a rewarding group activity, partake in short conversations and learn to respond in social situations.
