Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher at a South Los Angeles elementary school. The students in my class range from non-English speakers, English language Learner, and English Only; the only thing they have in common is the need to improve their reading skills. This is a high poverty, high crime area where students cannot walk to their local library without fear. I would like to provide my struggling readers with a variety of reading materials that will encourage and motivate them to become life long readers within the safety of school grounds.
Due to the lack of funds in my school we are limited to the books the adopted school curriculum provides. Most of the time these materials are two grade levels above my students ability to read and comprehend. Since they are not high interest books the students view reading as a chore. It is a self defeating cycle that the students that need to practice reading do not pick up books because they are not interested or motivated enough to read.
This is how your generous donation can help my students. In my classroom library I have about 5 copies of The Tale of Despereaux and the Phantom Tollbooth, it is hard for the students to enjoy these books because we do not have enough copies. I would like a classroom set in order to create literature groups where my students could use authentic literature to practice their reading.
Your generosity will provide my students with the spark to become lifelong readers and improve their reading skills at the same time. You can have a direct affect in the future of these deserving students.
